Collagen "The Sexy Protein"

The catchy title says it all. Collagen is the most abundant protein found in the human body. It's responsible for the health of our muscles, bones, skin, hair, nails, digestive system, blood vessels and tendons. Now can you see where that gem of a title comes from? In essence, it’s the glue that holds our bodies together. Without Collagen, we would simply collapse into a blob of tissue on the ground. Not the best picture am I right?

Presently, we are consuming less and less of this vital protein. Our ancestors had more access to this protein, because they consumed the entire animal. Large quantities were found in the bones of the animals or fresh fish. As well, I'm sure you caught them consuming eggs when they could possibly source them. Alright, so most of us aren't going to go hunting, nor boil animal carcasses for hours on the stove. We tend to seek convenience and that's why I am here today to suggest some simple ways to get this into your world.

If you're vegan/vegetarian it can be a little trickier to source it. Below, I will list foods that support the collagen in your body currently and those that aid in its absorption.

1.) Leafy Greens- Think Spinach, Arugula, Chard etc.

2.) Wild Caught Salmon, Sardines or Anchovies- Omega 3's are crucial at reducing inflammation and inhibiting Collagen production.

3.) Chia Seeds- Another fantastic source of Omega 3!

4.) Pastured Egg Yolks- Bonus the egg yolk actually contains Collagen!

5.) Berries- They're high in Vitamin C, which helps link Amino Acids together to aid Collagen formation in your body.

6.) Citrus- Once again another food group high in Vitamin C.

7.) Pumpkin Seeds- High in Zinc, which is another Collagen producer.

8.) Tomatoes- They're high in Lycopene, this is an important nutrient that protects our skin from sun damage and stops the breakdown of Collagen.

9.) Garlic- It's high in Sulfur, a trace mineral and also boosts the Collagen in your body.

10.) Sunflower Seeds+ Avocados- Both of these are extremely high in Vitamin E. Not only is Vitamin E key for our sex drives, but it also prevents Collagen break down and equates to body guarding your skin!

Now, last but not least let’s talk about practical ways to consume this protein. You have a few options and mine tend to swing with the seasons. Ideally, I love having a big cup of warm Bone Broth, however during the warmer months I'm not about that life. That's generally when I turn to one of my favorite companies Vital Proteins. They source an awesome Collagen protein powder that you can easily add to smoothies, tea, coffee or baked goods. Most health food stores will have Bone Broth in the freezer section or in the dry isle where broths are kept.

If you're looking to protect your digestive health, skin, hair, nails or joints. Than I would suggest incorporating this into your daily routine. After all who the hell wants to a blob!
